Sohrab's Story Sohrab the son of Hasan and Farzana is only eleven years of age when the Taliban massacre his mother and father before him, he describes how Aseef the Taliban leader stripped him of his innocence, Sohrab was used for the Taliban's sexual entertainment. When Amir enters the old shack where Sohrab is dancing with bells around his ankles, he sees a child which has become numb and almost lifeless; everything comes with a price and Aseef was not prepared to have Sohrab leave with Amir for nothing! Sohrab stands still and watches Aseef beat Amir to a pulp with his brass knuckles, suddenly Sohrab's courage is no longer concealed he pulls out his slingshot and shoots at Aseef! The ideal world would be where all of humanity shares equal rights, where everyday would be peaceful, crime, torture and war would be extinct. Sadly this is not the reality humanity knows...it is quite the opposite and I thought expressing Sohrabs point of view was an excellent idea because the original novel did not give us an insight to his emotions.
An Eye For Beauty In the Gion district beauty was quintessential, women were trained to enchant and entertain men and Nita Sayuri the most beautiful Geisha has captivated the Chairman. However this fanfiction takes into account the emotions and feelings of the woman that is left behind.....The Chairman's wife she describes her feelings of jealousy and anger towards her husband, We enter the mind of an insecure, neglected house wife, her fears of her husbands infidelity are no longer a mystery Her pride has been hurt and we discover how a married woman feels when she knows her husband is in love with one of the most beautiful women in Gion. We tend to ignore or neglect any other character other than the two lovers in a love story... we focus on their happiness and their emotion, however It is always good to realise that not everyone is on cloud nine, the chairman's wife was only mentioned once in the novel and this fanfiction was a great description of the pain such affairs can cause.
11 Minutes Revels an interesting twist to the original, We are introduced to a different perspective on sexuality and we are forced to ask is this the reality of today's society?, A gender twist with a serious taboo attached. Maria is still portrayed as the naive, innocent young female waiting for her next client at the local bar, as she sits and waits patiently her eyes gaze at a tall picturesque blond, she feels a sense of insecurity wishing she was as attractive as the woman with long blond hair. Days later Maria is compelled to ask where the slender blond has disappeared to and how she gets such high profile clients “she can earn four times what we make in a night.” “Why is that,” Maria asked out of innocence. “she is not a girl, he is a boy.”
The True Story Wouldn't it be interesting if the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet was twisted into a superficial comedy? In which Romeo despises the thought of even marrying Juliet claiming she is a "bloody pig" where Juliet did not have the complexion of a porcelain doll but instead she resembled a "bloated horse"? This take on Shakespeare’s classic does just that! We notice Romeo's disgust towards soon to be queen Juliet, how Juliet is a borderline stalker and how Amelia (a new character) is described as Romeo's dream woman "minus the large breasts". After saving the Prince from a humiliating ambush, Romeo and Amelia are to wed and as the veil is lifted we gasp in shock; we have been fooled Amelia is not who we thought she was! I must admit I couldn't help but laugh while I was reading this.
Life as a Street Rat I have to admit this recreation of Aladdin is quite similar to most relationships present in society today minus the genie and the talking animals. However if we actually look deep into the psychology of each character we notice that Jasmine is no longer interested in Aladdin, instead her love is expressed towards Jafar, Jafar is depicted as an older man going through his midlife crisis where his love interests are usually 20 years younger than him and he is only interested in using Jasmine to satisfy his sexual desires, Meanwhile a bitter and hurt Aladdin is pulling all the stops to try and stop Jasmine from marrying Jafar! After being given the "we can still be friend’s line" a lonely, heartbroken, penniless gold-digging Aladdin heads to Egypt where he marries the Pharaoh’s daughter. A great way to twist the original fairytale and bring it back down to reality!
Stuck up and Stereotyping "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife," The famous opening line of Pride and Prejudice is nowhere to be seen in this fanfiction. Facebook, twitter, night clubs and shallow teenage conversations are the theme of this fanfic.... perhaps it would have been a better idea to link this type of writing to a remake of a typical teen show... Something more along the lines of Orange County. Also it was difficult to follow the writing due to the fact genders were switched.. so instead of Elizabeth Bennet and her less fortunate sisters, we read about five middle class brothers looking for their next "ass to tap".
The Way Things Changed Is a glimpse of what the future held for Anouk based on a film which I like to describe as deliciously sensual Chocolat exposes the reality of how society judges and shuns away anyone that does not match their acceptance. Ten years down the line Anouk's point of view is expressed here, she is now married and has a daughter named Lynette. She tells us how she felt when her mother married Roux. Her life seems pleasant and no longer unsettled, she describes typical happy ending. In my view this was too cliche and the text did not express enough emotion... it was almost blase!
Daddy Based on the film Eastern Promises, Christine is now five years old and Anna is raising her with all the love, protection and happiness a child could ask for... But one day Christine asks her mother (Anna) who is my daddy? And that is when Anna begins to panic again. All this time Anna never thought of telling Christine who her father was or who her real mother was, will she tell her that her mother (Tatiana) was an innocent 14 year old was forced into prostitution? or how her father Semyon (The Russian mafia leader) raped Tatiana repeatedly? She cant bear the thought of telling her the truth. Anna's thoughts start to race... What could she possibly say? And that’s when she remembers Nikolai and how he risked his life for theirs. I thought this was a great read, it integrated memories, feelings, thoughts as well as the current present!
Hansel and Gretel Addams Style Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley and the list continues with comical Gothic characters from the Addams Family we have come to know. In the Addam's house it is quite natural and healthy for children to be playing with a guillotine, rainbow talk is unacceptable and fairy tales are a horror film! This fanfiction emphasises the disgust Gomez and Morticia share when Wednesday comes home in tears after being told the happy ending Hansel and Gretel had.... But Gomez was sure to put Wednesday at ease and comfort her by telling her the real ending of Hansel and Gretel where everyone lived miserable ever after. A funny description of Gomez and his odd version of the children's book, this was an original and well thought piece of work!
The Birth of Se7en The diary of a mad man is unravelled and narrated to us, John Doe's sick twisted thoughts are expressed, he detests everyone around him and can no longer stand what he sees, he refers to himself as the cleanser of sins and doesn’t regard his future actions as a crime but it is a way to bring justice to the world and all his actions are of holy motive. He then begins to believe his delusional thoughts of himself and compares himself to the sword of God, passing out horrendous sentence to these unworthy human beings. This is an interesting approach as to how someone’s view can be expressed; the reader takes a look into the mind of a psychologically disturbed and unstable man.
Unfortunately my original blog had to be deleted so this is a rewrite.. I hope this more condensed version will be interesting to read and hopefully this time it wont turn into a mess!!
